Borderlands 4 co-op

Borderlands 4 co-op is four players online with level scaling and per-player difficulty, plus two-player splitscreen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-play needs a free SHiFT Account. Single-player activities work offline; online multiplayer does not. Live storefronts are Steam, Epic, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The English FAQ still labels Nintendo Switch 2 as coming soon, while 2K Japan listed 3 October 2025. Steam minimum PC spec is Windows 10/11, an 8-core CPU such as i7-9700 or Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 2070-class GPU with 8 GB VRAM, and 100 GB SSD. Use this page to set up a squad before you farm.

Four-player online and SHiFT cross-play

  • Online co-op supports up to four players. The official FAQ states level scaling and per-player difficulty, so a lower-level friend can join without the host deleting progress.
  • Cross-play requires a free SHiFT Account, the same Gearbox service used for Golden Keys. Create that account on the SHiFT site or from the in-game Social menu, then link it to Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox. One SHiFT code redeems once per account, not once per platform.
  • Console online play still needs the platform subscription (PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass / Gold equivalent). PC Steam and Epic do not add a second paid online pass. SHiFT is the bridge; the FAQ does not describe a publisher matchmaking pass that replaces it.
  • Keep the host on the machine that already has the campaign save you care about. Guest guns stay on the guest vault, so farm on the character who should keep the drop. Send the invite from the Social menu rather than a third-party lobby tool.
  • If an invite never appears, confirm every client is on a live storefront, that SHiFT is linked to that storefront, and that console friends have the paid online pass enabled. Golden Keys and Hazard Pay continue on Loot after the account exists.
  • Level scaling lifts a lower-level guest without the host deleting progress. Party up on the platform that already holds your save, then send the SHiFT invite from the Social menu.

Splitscreen, offline, and who can host

  • PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S support two-player splitscreen. The FAQ does not extend that claim to PC or Switch 2. Local 2-2 on Xbox is the store listing's local range; online on that listing is 2-4.
  • All single-player activities can be played offline: story, local loot, and character progress. Online multiplayer is unavailable offline, including SHiFT, cross-play, and four-player sessions.
  • Hosting is the normal session host on your platform. Listen-server commands and LAN flags are not listed in the FAQ, so the setup stays at SHiFT plus the platform session.
  • A PlayStation 5 or Xbox couch pair can still fill the remaining two seats from Steam, Epic, or the other console after SHiFT is linked. That is a four-player online session with a splitscreen host, not four-way splitscreen.
  • PC players who want a shared screen need two computers or one of those consoles. Edition SKU does not change this: Standard and Super Deluxe use the same co-op rules.
  • If one player is on PC and the other is on a couch console, splitscreen cannot cover that mix: use four-player online after both SHiFT accounts are linked. Steam remains four-player online without a splitscreen line in the same FAQ answers.

Storefronts and the PC spec

  • Steam app 1285190 is the PC SKU dated 11 September 2025. Epic is named as live in the official FAQ. PlayStation 5 launched with the worldwide 12 September 2025 window. Xbox Series X|S lists 13 September 2025, Cloud Gaming, and store ID 9mx6hkf5647g.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 is the open platform question: English FAQ coming soon, 2K Japan 3 October 2025. Re-check 2K Japan before you assume a handheld session is live in your region.
  • Steam minimum spec is Windows 10 or 11, an 8-core CPU such as Core i7-9700 or Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 2070-class GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, and 100 GB on an SSD. Edition SKUs do not change the spec.
  • PlayStation still needs the console online subscription for four-player sessions even after SHiFT is linked. Cross-play still needs every player on a linked SHiFT Account, including two players on the same console generation.
  • If you are buying DLC rather than hardware, use Editions and Story Packs. Golden Keys and Hazard Pay ride the same SHiFT account, so create it once, link it, then join.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming is on the Series X|S listing, which is useful if a friend is joining from a lower-spec Windows box through the Xbox SKU rather than Steam. That Steam block is the documented floor for PC, not a recommended list, and it does not change if you buy Deluxe or Super Deluxe.
